Playing Suited Connectors

When you first start playing poker it is strongly recommended that you only play premium starting hands like AA, KK, QQ, JJ, 10 10, AK, and AQ suited. Now even in the beginning you have to be careful not to fall in love with these hands if you don’t hit them on the flop. What I mean by falling in love with the hand is that if the flop does not help your hand at all, you should not keep calling just because it was a nice hand to start out with. Pocket aces do not always win and if there are four hearts on the board and neither of your aces is a heart, then it is probably not a good idea to call a bet, even though you have such a pretty hand.

Playing a Wider Range

Once you gain some experience playing poker, like at the Overbet Poker site, then it is time to widen the amount of starting hands that you go into a hand with. Suited connectors are a very good hand to play once you have developed some experience in the game. 2 and 3 gap suited connectors can also be a profitable starting hand if you have the experience. An example of a gapped suited connector would be 8? 10?. Even the worst starting hand in hold em, 7 2 off suit, can turn into the best hand, you might flop two deuces and a 7. But suited connectors have the advantage of giving you more possible ways to make a good hand. You can pair them or make a set with them. You can make a straight or a flush with them. I don’t recommend that you call a big bet to play suited connectors but if you can get in the hand for a single bet, especially if you are in late position, you might wind up making a really good hand. You will lose more often than not with you suited connectors but when you do make a hand it should be hard to read and therefore make you a big score. This is especially true in no limit games because if you can get to see the flop with your suited connectors without having to make a big investment, you could wind up doubling your stack or better.

A Piece of Advice

The important thing to remember is that if you do not improve your hand on the flop, it is time to give it up and wait for another hand, unless of course you feel like you are in a position to steal the pot. Another advantage of playing suited connectors is that it can get you more action for the rest of the evening. If all you play are premium starting hands then pretty soon, the other players at the table, will pick up on that and you will get a whole lot less action. Once it is know that you have expanded your range of starting hands, you will find that you get a lot more calls with your premium starting hands.
